Chet Herren's 8.7 is the only sub-9 steer roping run of the year
Herren tied his steer in 8.7 seconds at the National Circuit Finals, the fastest of 2026. A wall of 9.1s sits behind him.
Chet Herren roped and tied his steer in 8.7 seconds at the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping, and the run paid $4,671. It is the only steer roping time under nine seconds anyone has recorded this season.
The chase behind him is tight. Scott Snedecor went 9.0 at the Mt. Pleasant Rodeo. Three ropers are knotted at 9.1: Troy Tillard at the San Antonio steer roping for $4,804, Riley O'Rourke at Guymon Pioneer Days, and Taylor Santos, also at Mt. Pleasant. Billy Good ran 9.2 at the Prairie Circuit Finals.
Steer roping is the event with the longest score and the most that can go wrong, the throw, the trip, and the tie, all of it on the run. Herren got a clean one to 8.7. That is the number standing at the top of the board as the event heads into its summer rodeos.
