Jake Smith and Nicky Northcott ran their last steer in 4.3 seconds in the sudden-death finals July 19 to win the NFR Open team roping title and pocket $16,000 a man in Colorado Springs. Although Smith, 33, and Northcott, 19, don’t rope together during the year, Northcott edged out Smith’s regular season partner Douglas Rich for the Wilderness Circuit year-end title, pairing the two up at the NFR Open. It was a familiar situation for Smith.

A July 15, 2026 press release from the United States Trade Representative’s office announced the final action, taken at President Trump’s direction by Ambassador Jamieson Greer, “under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 by imposing a 25% tariff on certain goods of Brazil.” This will be effective as of July 22, 2026, however, beef and beef products will be exempt from this tariff.

I tried to find a substitute writer for the week, but nobody took the bait. We are at 15 consecutive down days for August live cattle futures. Cash prices for live cattle are dropping fast with packers holding the leverage. Long term support levels are in range for the first time in since the end of 2025. Everyone knew this market had a break in it, but nobody knew when. Cash trade started at $238 midweek but drifted lower by Friday.
