Start with the boots
Everything else hangs off the boots. A real leather western boot with a walking heel, broken in before you go. A stiff new boot on a night of stairs and standing is a mistake you make once. Round toe or broad square toe walks easiest. They do not have to be expensive, they have to fit and bend.
The hat is a season, not a costume
Straw in the warm months, felt when it turns cold. That is the rule, and it is about weather and shade more than style. An outdoor summer rodeo is straw and a brim that keeps the sun off. An indoor winter rodeo is felt. If you are not a hat person, skip it, plenty of the crowd does.
Jeans that stack over the boot
A bootcut or straight jean long enough to stack a little over the boot shaft. That is the whole trick. Darker denim reads a touch dressier if it is an evening performance. For her, a high rise holds its line through a long day in the stands.
The top, and then a layer
For him, a pearl snap or a clean western shirt is the uniform, and it never looks wrong. For her, the range is wide, a western blouse, a dress over boots, denim and fringe, whatever you would actually wear. The one thing everyone forgets: bring a layer. A rodeo arena swings cold after sundown even on a hot day, and a jacket or a vest saves the night.
What to skip
Stiletto heels sink in dirt and catch on stairs. Open-toe shoes are a poor idea anywhere near livestock. A boot you bought that morning will blister you by the short round. And you do not need head-to-toe rhinestones unless that is genuinely your thing, the crowd is more jeans-and-boots than costume.
